On Wednesday, The Luxembourg parliament to go for a taxi reform. Here are the main changes, as reported by the “Luxemburger Wort“ newspaper:
- Centralisation of granting licences through the Ministry of Sustainable Development: in the future, communes would surrender to the state its right to grant licences
- Geographical reorganisation of licencing into six zones nationwide
- Setting a maximum limit on the number of licences per geographical zone (total 550)
- A total of 20 licences per year reserved exclusively for zero-emission taxis
- The introduction of freedom of fares (repealing determination of the state’s maximum prices)
- Prices must be clearly visible both inside and outside the taxi
- Use of the taxi meter remains mandatory
- The correct functioning of the taxi meter checked at least once annually by the SNCA
- The taxi licence, as well as the driver’s licence, must be clearly visible.
- Compliance with the rules can be controlled by police and newly by customs
- Abolition of the „head of the queue“ principle, meaning a passenger can select his/her choice of taxi freely and doesn’t have to take the first taxi in the queue.
- Creation of a central complaints office
