Reg Kermode (87), founder and long time Executive Chairman of Cabcharge, died on April 30, after losing his battle with cancer. Mr. Kermode, who started Cabcharge 39 years ago, was one of the oldest and longest-serving corporate bosses in Australia. He transformed the taxi industry in Australia by developing Cabcharge as the main payment platform and the dominant force in the Australian taxi trade.
He also developed Cabcharge’s interest in the taxi and bus business abroad by participating in ComfortDelgro Cabcharge. The Cabcharge payment system is also in use in a number of European countries. In 2009 the company’s anti-competitive behaviour led to a conviction in the Australian federal court. In recent years Cabcharge fought new competition in the form of apps, bypassing its payment systems. Mr. Kermode also held several powerful positions in Australian and international taxi trade associations. wf
